What the numbered triangle on the bottom of a container actually means.
The resin identification code is a material label, not a recyclability guarantee. Code 1 is PET, 2 HDPE, 3 PVC, 4 LDPE, 5 PP, 6 PS, and 7 is other — including multi-layer and compostable-plastic variants.
What actually gets recycled depends on your local programme, which in turn depends on end markets. If recycled content or recyclability is a stated brand goal, the material choice and the closure and label materials all have to be considered together.
